High efficiency DC/DC converters eliminate heatsink requirement in compact communication systems

2005-03-01

Designed for use without baseplates or heatsinks, the SynQor range of board mounted, DC/DC converters is now available from DT Electronics. These compact units come in 15A, 20A, 25A, 30A, 40A and 60A (up to 165 Watt) ratings. They have nominal 24/48V DC inputs, output voltages from 1.5V to 15V DC and are ideal for communications applications where space is at a premium.

SynQor use a synchronous rectification technique as the basis for their range of half-brick and quarter-brick DC/DC converters. This boots operating efficiencies to between 88% and 90%, some 10% higher than conventional Schottky diode based devices. The lower heat levels generated by synchronous rectification mean that there is no need for either baseplates or heatsinks when using the SynQor products at their maximum ratings. This results in substantial space, weight and cost savings and makes the converters ideal for the distributed power architectures commonly used in communication systems. It also allows denser packing of rack-mounted circuit boards within such systems, further reducing overall equipment size.
