Three terminal switching regulators deliver 75% space saving

A space-saving 0.5A DC/DC switching regulator designed to replace industry-standard 7805 linear devices is now available from CTC via exclusive UK distributor, DT Electronics. C78XX-XX family devices are pin-compatible with linear counterparts but with up to 97% efficiency they eliminate the need for heatsinks to give 75% space savings and reduced assembly costs. The typical price in volume is £1.80 to £2 each.

The non-isolated regulators measure 11.5mmL x 7.5mmW x 10.2mmH, operate from 4.75VDC to 28VDC input and are available in seven standard versions with output voltages from +1.8VDC to +12VDC. Devices with any output voltage from +1.5VDC to +12VDC can be supplied to special order. Output current for all types is 0.5A and the regulators feature integral short circuit protections and thermal shutdown. Typical ripple and noise is 30mV to 50mV, depending on output voltage. This can be halved where necessary with the addition of a 100µF capacitor on the output. Otherwise, no external components are needed with these devices which have a maximum operating temperature of +85 °C.

These regulators are commonly used to increase the input voltage range at the input of isolated DC/DC converters or to provide improved loading and regulation at the output of such converters.
